I really loved this column written by my friend and coworker, Halsey, about the journey she went through in getting and learning to accept her new trach. While the trach saved her life, she also admits getting one prompted her to grieve her old life. Of course, these types of medical devices are necessary for our quality of life. But, they are a huge adjustment, some harder than others in terms of the mental impacts they have on a person. Can you relate to Halsey? How did you learn to accept your new medical device?

Halsey does a great job “normaizing” something that can be quite frightening. For me again it was the feeding tube. It was an adjustment for sure. I haven’t gotten to the point of trach talk, but it’s probably not a bad idea to at least think it over.
