  • As an SMA patient, have you thought about parenthood and pregnancy?

When I opened SMA News Today to submit a draft the other day, a headline caught my eye: Women with SMA can have successful pregnancies with team-based care.

I was stunned. With all of the different health complications SMA and pregnancy can have, it seemed impossible to me to combine the two conditions, until I read the article. Not to mention the high cost of both medical fees and raising a child after their birth.

Many of us are at the age now where we’d be becoming parents if not for SMA, and some of us are at a stage where we have kids despite SMA and may want more. I’m in the former group, and find myself contemplating parenthood a lot these days.

What about you, though? Would you want to try for a biological child? Or have you already gone through pregnancy and birth, and would like to share your experience?
