At a recent checkup my primary physician gave me a referral to see an endocrinologist to discuss bone density issues.  A couple years ago I had a bone density scan, and needless to say my bones are less than stellar.  Being that I’m non weight bearing that wasn’t surprising.  I also am on the Depo shot to prevent getting my period.  I only mention that because of course that’s bad for bones as well.  Luckily I haven’t had many issues throughout my lifetime, so I haven’t given it much thought.  Several years ago I did break my arm when I was one direction and my arm went the other.  They couldn’t surgically repair it like they would have in the usual circumstance because of my crappy bones.  Thankfully it was my “bad” arm, so whatever, I didn’t want surgery anyway.  Are any of you guys concerned about bone density?  Do you take any steps to prevent problems?

Yeah my last broken leg was in April 2017. I was out of town for a medical conference and fell out of my hoyer lift during a bathroom transfer. Coincidentally it was the same day that my first column for SMA News Today went online. Needless to say I had plenty to write about at that time haha.

It’s definitely a concern, but I would say that my muscles are getting stronger between Spinraza and regular physical therapy. I saw a specialist last year after I recovered from the broken leg, but the medications that this doctor recommended had too many risk factors. Plus it wasn’t too long after that that I started Spinraza. My advice would be to consult with your primary doctor again and see what they recommend.
