Experiencing Objectification
Hey everyone! Something weird happened while I was at Target yesterday, and I thought I’d share it with you all. Someone complimented the shirt I was wearing—a velvet t-shirt, so nothing over the top—and the guy behind her spent a good five seconds staring at my chest as he passed me.
That happens to a lot of people, but it very rarely happens to me, probably because disabled people aren’t seen as sexual beings. It was strange. Not exactly a pleasant experience, but at the same time, it was weirdly affirming, which is kind of sad when you think about it. I wish something as unsettling as objectification didn’t make me feel like a “normal” person with a “normal” amount of sex appeal.
Have you experienced something similar? How did it make you feel?
