In the latest episode of the SMA News Today Podcast, I interview Owen Kent, a filmmaker who has SMA Type II. A graduate of UC Berkeley’s film school, Kent recently wrote, produced and starred in his first feature-length film, Angels of Mercy.

In Angels of Mercy, Kent plays a computer hacker whose house is invaded by a cult of eugenicists. “It’s like Home Alone meets Rosemary’s Baby,” Kent says as he explains the origins of his horror experiment. While he hopes that the film will entertain audiences, Kent also wants it to challenge stereotypes about how people with disabilities are generally portrayed in the media. Kent and his team are currently in the post-production phase, and are seeking a distributor for the film.

During the interview, Kent also talks about growing up with SMA, the origins of his artistic career, his admiration for the work of iconic director Stanley Kubrick and his daily life since graduating college.
