What type of shower chair do you have?
I think it’s time for me to get a new shower bed. I’m not even sure if that’s the correct term. It’s a mesh bed in a bathtub. I’ve had mine for as long as I can remember, but it’s getting very difficult to be carried in and out of it. However, I don’t know where to begin, so I thought I would turn to the forum.
What are the first steps I should take to get a new shower bed? Are there websites I can browse? Does insurance cover the cost of something like this?

First get a prescription from your doctor for a PT evaluation for a new bath chair. During your PT evaluation the PT will take measurements of your body and discover your limitations. The PT should have some booklets of different bath chairs and accessories. On the next visit you should be able to try a few bath chairs. Then you can pick the one that you works for your situation. Insurance will pay for the new bath chair but it will take a few months to get approved. Hope this information is helpful and useful.

The only bath chair that I have used is called an AquaTec bath lift. It raises and lowers into the bath tub with water pressure. Unfortunately, the company doesn’t make them this way anymore. The bath lifts now come with a battery that has to be charged when using the bath lift. It is not ideal but some still like this type of bath chair.

We have gone through more then a dozen shower chairs in my life. The main problem with 90 percent of shower chairs is the wheels. The axle always rust after only a few weeks making the chair virtually unusable. Replacement wheels typically cost nearly the entire cost of the chair. They are generally one size fits all made of cheap pvc with hard seats and no neck support. Is much sturdier, more modifiable, and while the wheels still bind a bit, it is much better then the pvc models.

Thank you for sharing. I’ve been looking at chairs with wheels but didn’t even consider them getting rusted. That makes sense, though.

I’ve used regular $20 camping chairs for the last several years. They’re much more conducive to supporting our shapes than the typical rigid shower chairs, and they’re portable and cheap. But they are low and don’t have wheels so it’s harder on caregivers, so I’m also in the process of getting a proper shower chair through insurance. I’m looking for something like these:

The Tilt-n-Space is similar to the one I have now, although mine is completely flat. I think it was going to the upright position, though. I’ll have to look into this.
