I once read that SMA influencer Shane Burcaw took a trip with his brother on a whim. As someone who requires time to plan and prepare almost every outing, that blew my mind — SMA makes everything unpredictable. How could he pack and go just like that? What if the streets were tough to navigate? What if he needed to go to the ER?

I do envy people who treat life as an adventure like that, though. I want to learn from you, if you’re anything like Shane. And I think there’s a thing or two I could tell you about my approach to planning, if y’all want. So, what do you say? Shall we exchange knowledge?

I would never be able to go on a trip like that on short notice. However, I was definitely more spontaneous in my twenties than I am now in my thirties. That said, my idea of spontaneity is probably very different from that of a non-disabled person. It was usually contingent on whether I had caregivers, whether I was feeling well that day, whether I didn’t have any medical issues going on, etc., etc. So yeah, there was always a level of planning involved.

However, when things fell into place like that, I would go wherever my heart desired for the day. Even if it was a couple of hours away from home. One of my favorite things to do with a friend was driving aimlessly for hours until we were completely lost and had to find our way back without GPS. We’d end up in a random town and just explore.

What holds you back from living on a whim more often?
