Nothing SMA related but I have been kicking around ideas for new tattoos. Might have to think about incorporating something like that…

MemberSeptember 26, 2023 at 2:16 pm in reply to: Looking for Apple Watch band recommendationsI’ve heard from a lot of people the trail loop is the most comfortable and may be the easiest with the velcro fastening. I considered the trail loop but didn’t like the colors my cell provider offered so I went with the alpine loop instead.

I’ll get the new vaccines at my earliest convenience to stay on top of the latest strains as much as possible. Aside from that I’ll just be my regular germaphobe self.

I’m always walking and I kinda assumed it was because I didn’t get my chair until I was in the early 30s. But I recently realized that I have no trouble with things like stairs and running in dreams and they’ve been a nemesis all my life.
A side note… I recently had my first lucid dream. I got nervous and forced myself awake just to make sure I could. Afterwards I tried to have more for a week or so until I started to read that it could cause sleep paralysis and noped out (that sounds awful).

I’m not in a huge rush as I really don’t have respiratory issues and such and getting sick isn’t usually a big deal for me. But I’ll probably get a second booster by the end of summer just to be safe (keeping an eye on effectiveness data coming in on how much a 4 shot helps, new variants, etc)… Especially with many safety measures being lifted in most areas. My default position currently is to stay as boosted as possible, as I see no downside.

If you enjoy philosophy and/or psychology you might like Very Bad Wizards, The Partially Examined Life, Two Psychologist Four Beers, and Decoding the Gurus.
Sean Carroll’s Mindscape covers a wide range of topics but is mostly science focused (he’s a theoretical physicist).
My current favorite comedy podcast is Your Mom’s House (with Tom and Christina) but it’s not for everyone and some might consider it offensive (I won’t mention my other favorite because almost everyone considers it offensive).
News and politics… The Lawfare podcast, Dauly Beans, The Fifth Column, Rational Security…

My arm was a little sore for a few days after the 2nd shot. I also had a mild headache for about 12hrs but I get those occasionally and don’t even know that was related to the vaccine. The risks of the vaccine are small compared to that of getting COVID while unvaccinated. Unless you’re unable to get vaccinated because of allergies to it’s constituent parts or something along those lines I can’t imagine the vaccine being the bigger risk. But as Alyssa already mentioned, you should talk to your doctor.
mRNA vaccines don’t use an actual virus BTW. Even vaccines that do use a weak or inactive virus are much safer than catching the actual virus while being unvaccinated.

I started Evrysdi on June 15th (my first attempt at treatment). Can’t say I’ve noticed any clear effects so far, positive or negative.

Avoiding my more/potentially controversial favorites (political, dark humor, etc)…
Sean Carrol’s Mindscape – Wide range of topics but Sean is a theoretical physicist, professor at Caltech, and proponent of Everettian (“many worlds”) Quantum Mechanics.
Very Bad Wizards- A psychologist and a philosopher having mostly casual conversations. Usually an opening segment on something current event related, followed by a dive into a movie, book, or academic paper… Even the video game Soma recently.
Curiosity Daily- Very short, usually with two or three science news bits.
Radio Lab- I haven’t listened lately because I got annoyed with how overproduced it is and I don’t want to listen to five minutes of random sounds of the world in between every actual thought… But I was addicted at one time and they have had some great episodes.
Star Talk – Science stuff made to be fun and accessible (great for kids or beginners).
You’re Not So Smart- I haven’t seen this update in awhile and I’m not sure if they’re still putting out shows. All about logical fallacies, biases, etc.
… I’ll stop there. That’s off the top of my head. I listen to a lot of podcasts and audiobooks.

Purely anecdotal but between myself and 4 or 5 friends I’ve asked we all prefer Zyrtec (Cetirizine) over Claritin (which did nothing for me) or anything else we’ve tried. It doesn’t completely alleviate my symptoms but it’s the only thing that’s really seemed to help at all.

I think I’d have to move to somewhere with the most temperate climate possible just to keep my internet. Couldn’t go without my online gaming… Everything else I could give up, but not that.

MemberOctober 27, 2023 at 12:46 am in reply to: Looking for Apple Watch band recommendationsI think I’m just remembering why I never wore watches much. Even the most comfortable ones get on my nerves after half a day or so. I had planned to wear it all the time and basically replace my phone for most things. But my phone is already pretty convenient and doesn’t irritate my wrist after awhile. If I want to listen to an audio book or podcast I need to use bluetooth earbuds (which is great for public but not when alone)… I really do like it. Just not worth the cost for me and not as useful as I had hoped it could be.

It’s a cool gadget, but I’m honestly not getting as much use out of it as I had hoped. I probably would have been better served (certainly much cheaper) with a phone mount, or a tablet and mount, for my chair and bed. It will be nice to have the option to leave my phone at home at least, but I don’t get out much.

So… I found the alpine loop very uncomfortable. It’s rough/stiff with almost a sharp edge (as “sharp” as a nylon type material can be). I ordered a $12 trail loop knockoff (HITZEE brand) from Amazon and like it much better. Much softer and easy to get the tightness just right.

I ordered the new Ultra 2 and it’s on backorder with my cell provider, not expected for a few weeks. It’ll be my first smartwatch.

I’m far from an expert so please take with a grain of salt…
I believe the genetic test would only be needed to measure the numbers of SMN2 gene copies, where as the Risdiplam works by increasing the SMN protein levels. I would think that measuring protein levels would be pretty straightforward with a blood test (but it may be more complicated than I give it credit for). I am curious about this myself. I did find this article with the little searching I’ve been able to do so far…

I haven’t personally noticed any drowsiness from the Centirizine but IIRC I have seen it mentioned as a possible side effect.
