According to the Muscular Dystrophy Association of New Zealand, there are some vaccinations that all people who have a neuromuscular disorder should have on an annual basis, as well as other considerations to make about vaccinations.

The current guidelines in New Zealand are that all people who live with a neuromuscular disorder are more susceptible to lung infections so should get the flu vaccination each year along with the pneumococcal vaccination, particularly if they are taking corticosteroids. The country also recommends that patients have the varicella (chicken pox) vaccination before beginning corticosteroid treatment.

However, the type of vaccinations you require will depend on your circumstances and the medications you take. Neuromuscular disorder patients who have normal immune systems can have live vaccinations without any problems. Those who have a compromised immune system or are taking immunosuppressive drugs will need to have inactive vaccinations.

It’s also recommended that anyone coming into regular contact with the patient should also have the yearly flu and pneumococcal vaccinations to prevent passing on any illnesses.
