How did you choose your career path?
As a homeschooled kid with SMA, I wasn’t expected to have a career. Therefore, no one really asked me the age-old question of what I want to be when I grow up. I never gave it much thought either. The lack of introspection regarding this question has left me with quite a conundrum recently.
I am now faced with three, maybe four, different choices to pursue. I know I don’t necessarily have to choose, but for the sake of conserving time and energy, I want to choose one to really specialize in, whilst letting the others take a backseat. I just don’t know how. But I thought y’all might know.
For those who’ve been in a similar situation, how did you choose what you wanted in your career? Any words of wisdom for fickle kids like me?

My work has largely been determined by what I can do, which is mostly creative in nature, either writing, 3D design, or software. And a career as a disabled person who relies on Medicaid not just for my healthcare but also for IHSS, managing income limits is its task. I run businesses partly so that I can control how much I pay myself.

That’s still a number of options! Are you leaning towards one or the other these days?

Like Cam, my jobs are more creative, and I started doing them in a very roundabout way. I went to a business university, and when I graduated with a marketing degree, I didn’t know what to do. Back then, working from home wasn’t really a thing yet, and I knew my body wouldn’t be able to handle the physical demands of full-time employment.
Instead, I started exploring things that brought me joy, like blogging and posting on social media. By doing so, people discovered my work, and that was the foundation on which I started my career. Bionews found my blog and asked me to become a columnist. Then my boss at my other job started following me on Instagram, liked what she saw, and asked me to come on board to start a company with her. This July will mark six years I’ve been there.
I totally understand your concern about managing your energy, but take time to figure out what lights you up the most. Then I suggest chasing that feeling.

I think a lot of us with SMA start doing our jobs in a roundabout way. I wouldn’t be where I am if Brie hadn’t introduced me to BioNews or saw a call for pitches for PCGamesN. One thing led to another. Now, I get to say I’ve won awards for my video games work and advocacy. It’s nuts.
My problem now is that all of my options light me up. So, we’ll see how that goes. 😂
