Qualifying Disability-Related Expenses for ABLE Accounts

Posted by alyssa-silva on November 12, 2021 at 12:43 pm

So I’m new to the world of ABLE accounts and am trying to figure everything out. I know we can only spend what’s in the account on certain things, or qualifying disability-related expenses, but how technical can I get here? QDE’s are stated as:

“A qualified disability expense (QDE) is any expense related to the account owner’s blindness or disability that assists them in increasing and/or maintaining their health, independence and/or quality of life.“

So, for example, I need snow tires on my wheelchair-accessible van which essentially impacts my quality of life. Does something like this count or am I stretching? How do you determine these things?

First, I’m not an expert on ABLE program. To be honest, I don’t think there will be a lawyer on each case asking for the reasons for each withdrawal. I don’t see SSI making a big deal as long as you keep the receipts and the spending is somehow improving your QoL.

Essentially anything can be justified, since they allow for anything that betters your life. Tires on your van is a complete non-issue, since you need the van to get to doctors’ appointments. But you really can do almost anything if you can say how it improves your life. Example: going on vacation.
