Edward Smith, MD, is an adjunct professor of pediatrics at Duke University Hospital. He earned his medical degree from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine and has practiced since 2007. He completed a child neurology residency and a neuromuscular medicine fellowship at Duke University.

His clinical research focuses on neuromuscular diseases, including spinal muscular atrophy and Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Smith directed the Duke Children’s Neuromuscular Program until 2023. He now serves as medical director for Rare Disease Research, a clinical trial network aimed at accelerating access to trials for patients with rare pediatric diseases.
