Surrounded by kids, friends from school, camera pointing at them, masks on, and backdrop chosen. A birthday party is in full force at a venue called Selfie Party Fun in Naperville, Illinois.

A full array of activities was going on, most of which Ella can partake in, to one degree or another. There were three separate areas for fun-filled photography, where kids can dress up as favorite characters or heroes, or just be plain silly. They’re given a remote control and, presto, selfies are taken and immediately shown for enjoyment and laughs. Table and floor games, darts and foosball, balloons and stuffed animals all make for a great place to have a birthday party. Pizza, snacks, and cake are served by the staff and the kids eat while they sing karaoke.

Often birthday parties are held in venues where Ella has limited access to or simply cannot readily participate in. Moon bounce houses, climbing-wall structures, and arcades all provide a challenge for Ella to be able to play alongside her peers. But what thoughtful friends Ella has! Several of them call us before planning their child’s party and ask what kind of venue works best for Ella. It’s because they really want her to attend their parties. Ella is so fortunate to have such caring friends to grow up with. Little does she know about how many people think of her.

While every venue may not be ideal, there are plenty that fit the bill just fine. And what better way to make for positive childhood memories than to spend time celebrating birthdays together with friends?

Ella, despite her physical challenges, is a very social person. Even if there are a few things she cannot do at the birthday parties, we know she thrives on the interactions with her friends. She always leaves a party excited that she went.
