Spinal Fusion
Came across this article on spinal surgery that confirmed what I’ve experienced. Both good and bad.
About 5 years ago I met with an orthopedic surgeon to research the options available to me for near constant back pain. He didn’t miss a beat, immediately planning spinal fusion. I was 50 at the time and my body‘s ability to recover from major surgery has changed over the years.
Yeah, no.
Growing up with really good doctors and having doctors in my family meant my baseline was a lot of trust in my medical team. I never wanted to believe that surgeons and hospital administrators would be motivated by the bottom line.
Some are.
Some are still motivated to help their patients.
It can be hard to tell the difference.
Also, my personal experience does not speak to yours. This might be a good option for a lot of people, but the actual data on patient outcome has to be part of the conversation.

The Spinal Surgeries That Didn’t Need to Happen
As much as half of all spinal fusions don’t alleviate pain — why do doctors perform so many?
