Re: back brace helps ease scoliosis in SMA children
Couldn’t figure out how to post on the article itself so I am including the link at the bottom, but I have questions.
Has anybody ever tried to make these braces look a little less heinously ugly? We all know the science and the support needed to create a better outcome, but we’re also talking about kids. Kids who are exposed to impossible beauty standards that are compounded with a disability.
I wore back braces from the age of 8 to 17 (ish) and I hated them. It didn’t take me long to figure out how to wiggle out of them at night because they were so uncomfortable.
Counterproductive, I know. Remember: contrary teenager.
And finding clothes that would cover the brace? Impossible. Got to the point that I just wouldn’t wear it anymore. If anybody had tried to redesign it to make it look more like a corset or something more easily hidden under clothes, I guarantee you I would’ve been wearing it much longer.
When we talk about “multidisciplinary early intervention approach” let’s not skip getting the kids on board, making this plan of care palatable for them.
Remember: teenagers.
