Ideas for disability-inspired adaptations of classics?
What would Elizabeth Bennet be like if she had SMA? What would any character from the literary classics canon be like if they had SMA, for that matter?
While writing my most recent column, I had to try to come up with acting roles I’d only seen non-disabled people play but would be perfectly fine for a disabled actress to take on. Because I share a birthday with Jane Austen (a fact I’ll never shut up about), Pride and Prejudice came to mind. I thought how it deals with wealth classes, privilege, biases, and equality when it comes to marriage might even be enriched if done with an interabled cast. That got me thinking… Are there any other literary classics and characters that would be enriched if played by someone with SMA?
