SMA Europe has launched an online tool designed to help patients, doctors, and others in the spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) community more easily explore ongoing clinical trials across Europe and worldwide.

The organization said it aims for the Clinical Trials Finder to become “the go-to global resource” for finding information on clinical research.

The tool offers a centralized, user-friendly platform where patients, caregivers, healthcare professionals, and patient organizations can search for clinical trials tailored to individual needs. Companies can also benefit, as they depend on “efficient recruitment” to move trials along, according to the group.

“We know from our community that many people living with SMA want to participate in research but face barriers in accessing clear and timely information,” Nicole Gusset, PhD, CEO of SMA Europe, said in a press release emailed to SMA News Today. “This tool was developed to respond directly to that need, empowering families around the globe to make informed decisions and supporting faster recruitment into trials.”

“Clinical trial recruitment has become increasingly complex with the growing number of studies in SMA,” said Thomas Koed, PhD, chair of SMA Europe’s treatment committee. “By providing transparent and accessible information in one place, we believe this tool will benefit everyone involved – patients, families, clinicians, and researchers alike.”

Besides finding clinical studies based on individualized searches, users of the Clinical Trials Finder platform can view an interactive map showing ongoing SMA clinical trials worldwide. They can also sign up for email updates to be notified when new trials become available and take advantage of real-time updates drawn directly from clinicaltrials.gov.

The finder is part of the SMA Europe Clinical Trials Hub, which provides information about investigational therapies. It is also integrated into OdySMA, SMA Europe’s platform intended to drive advocacy and identify hurdles to healthcare access across European countries.

“We invite the SMA community, clinicians, and researchers to explore the Clinical Trials Finder today and share it widely to ensure more families can benefit,” the organization said.
