For most of my life, summer was my favorite season. I’ve never been a fan of school or frigid temperatures, both of which are absent during the summer. Once I graduated from high school, however, summer no longer held first place. Over the last few years, fall has become my preferred season for numerous reasons.

First and foremost, fall hosts my beloved sports: football and basketball. In a February column, “My Appreciation for Sports: It’s a Love Story,” I shared why sports are such a big part of my life. In a way, they are my best friends. I can’t control much in my life or do much, but I can always count on sports to bring me joy.

Things also quiet down somewhat in the fall. Summer was my break before, but now it’s actually a more hectic time because my siblings visit home. I love my brother and sister, but I also enjoy having a quiet house.

Thanksgiving, one of my favorite holidays, is the pinnacle of fall. The day revolves around the “F Trinity” — football, family, and food — in its full glory. It’s refreshing to have a day dedicated to counting my blessings rather than focusing on my trials. Despite SMA, I have much to be thankful for. My JACO robotic arm and good health are at the top of my list this year. Oh, and let’s not forget about ibuprofen.

The weather is also nice. I prefer hotter temperatures, but fall is warm enough to go outside without freezing to death. It’s beautiful at home in central Oregon this time of year. We have majestic mountains, trees, and rivers, all of which look prettier in the fall. My area’s population is booming because of it.

This fall is even more special than usual because we’re about to welcome my seventh cousin to the family. My aunt is due Nov. 11 but could give birth any time now. One thing SMA has not robbed me of is the ability to hold my baby cousin, so I look forward to meeting him.

Every season has its pros and cons, but I enjoy fall the most. This year, there are even more pros than usual. I’m excited to see what the rest of the season brings.
