Since I have spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), my birthday always demands a grand celebration. And this year was extraordinary. Not only am I closer to bidding farewell to my 20s, but I also had the chance to journey back to my beloved hometown, New York City, for an unforgettable reunion with my friends. It was a birthday bursting with nostalgia and joy, one of the most remarkable I’ve experienced in years.

Spending the past six years in a small town has deepened my feelings of solitude and isolation. The absence of specialized programs for disabled people, coupled with limited transportation options and a scarcity of accessible public spaces, makes forging meaningful connections challenging. Consequently, my freedom feels restricted. I’m confined to the sparse offerings of Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

During my action-packed weekend in New York, I was swept up by excitement, belonging, and acceptance. Even though the whirlwind of city life left me exhausted, the adrenaline kept me soaring. Surrounded by old friends and new faces, I felt a sentimental pang for a life I yearn to live more often. It was a bittersweet reminder of the vibrant, exhilarating world I once thrived in and long to have again.

Some parts of the trip were fraught with stress and challenges. For starters, there was no space for my mother to park and unload the rented wheelchair van directly in front of the hotel. That meant we had to leave the vehicle in a distant parking lot and make multiple trips up the street to our hotel, hauling all our luggage. Anyone familiar with traveling with a disability such as SMA knows that traveling light is a fantasy; each move is a considerable adventure.

Additionally, our hotel room was anything but wheelchair-friendly. It was so cramped that for the entire three days, my wheelchair had to stay parked in the hall, and we could only hope it wouldn’t disappear.

Despite the stress and frustration, I was determined not to let my birthday trip be spoiled. I clung to the reason I was there, and having my friends by my side constantly reminded me of that purpose. Their support and encouragement kept my focus sharp, helping me see past the challenges and savor the joy of the occasion.

Finding joy, despite the obstacles

Reflecting on this stellar birthday, I remember the delicate dance between challenges and triumphs. Celebrating the beginning of the last year of my 20s with a friendship reunion in New York was infused with melancholy and exuberance. The contrast between my solitary, small-town life and the city’s electric pulse only highlighted the depth of my longing for connection and adventure with people who genuinely understand me.

Yes, the trip was not without its hurdles — from the parking struggles to the cramped hotel room — but these obstacles only sharpened the joy I experienced. With the unwavering support of my mother, little brother, and friends, I navigated the stress and embraced the celebration. It was a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of holding on to moments that remind us of the lives we cherish and the connections we hold dear.

Ultimately, this birthday was more than just a milestone; it was a reaffirmation of the exhilarating world I aspire to have and a reminder that, whatever the obstacles, there’s always a reason to celebrate and find joy in the journey.
