2018 Henry Viscardi Achievement Awards
The Viscardi Center is accepting nominations for the 2018 Henry Viscardi Achievement Awards through October 1st, 2018. The Viscardi Center educates, employs, and empowers individuals with disabilities through services and programs, and is named after Dr. Henry Viscardi, Jr. Dr. Viscardi wore prosthetic legs and served as disability adviser for eight U.S. presidents, from Franklin D. Roosevelt to Jimmy Carter.
The Henry Viscardi Achievement Awards (HVAA), first bestowed in 2013, recognize leaders in the disability community—particularly those who have impacted attitudes, awareness, and the quality of life of people with disabilities. Nominees have been from cities in the U.S. and countries around the world, and have had a wide range of disabilities; nominees have been active in all walks of life, from academia and healthcare to nonprofits and government service.
Individuals of any age are eligible for nomination, so long as they have a disability. Nominees should demonstrate commitment to and a vision for enhancing the quality of life of disabled individuals. This can take several forms. For example, nominees may facilitate full participation in society for disabled individuals, or push for transformation leading to improved outcomes and higher expectations for the disability community. The 2017 HVAA awardees were from India, South Africa, and the United States, among others, and included representatives of Facebook, Comcast, and the U.S. army.
Nominations are open through October 1st, 2018. Winners will be announced in December 2018; awards will be presented to the recipients in New York City on December 4th, 2018. The 2018 selection committee is chaired by former U.S. senator Robert Dole and Sherwood (Woody) D. Goldberg, Senior Adviser for Asian Affairs at the Center for Naval Analysis.
