If you or someone you know is involved with the disability community, the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD)‘s Paul G. Hearne Emerging Leader Awards might be of interest to you. In 2019, two individuals exemplifying leadership, advocacy, and dedication to the community will receive 2,500 USD in recognition of their achievements. They will also receive an additional 7,500 USD in support of an initiative that increases the political and economic power of disabled people.

The award is named after Paul G. Hearne, an advocate for and leader of the disability community. Hearne worked to increase employment opportunities for people with disabilities through Just One Break, an employment agency in New York City, and The Dole Foundation for Employment of People with Disabilities in Washington, DC. Hearne’s desire to found an association that uplifted people with disabilities was fulfilled in 1995 through the creation of AAPD.

Applicants must submit the following materials: a resume, answers to three essay questions, and two letters of support. Letters of support can be written by employers, colleagues, academic and professional advisers, among others, and should speak to the candidate’s experience and work ethic. Applicants must also complete the online application, including an informational demographic section. Finalists will be interviewed via phone or video chat.

The awardees must attend the AAPD Leadership Awards Gala on March 12, 2019 in Washington, DC. They must also submit reports on their initiative, discuss their work with AAPD’s 2019 summer interns, promote AAPD’s other programs, and engage with AAPD’s social media platforms. To get a feel for what the committee is looking for, check out the 2018 awardees: Lydia X. Z. Brown and Emily Ladau.

Applicants must identify as having a disability; however, there are no age requirements. Applications are due on October 1, 2018. For more information, check out AAPD’s webpage for the 2019 Paul G. Hearne Emerging Leader Awards. Email [email protected] or call (202) 521-4316 with questions or concerns.
