Accessible hobbies for SMA?
Posted by sherry-toh on September 15, 2025 at 10:46 pmI have to admit, whenever someone asks me about my hobbies, I struggle. Unlike non-disabled people who don’t have SMA, my options are pretty limited, and anything that’s a passion of mine somehow turns into a job or a side hustle. I mean, I’m a video game journalist who also posts about how she does makeup on TikTok. That’s gaming, writing, and makeup artistry that’s stopped feeling like it’s just for me some days. The only hobby I’ve really kept private is doll collecting.
But this got me thinking: if I’m struggling to find a hobby, other SMA patients must be too. Maybe we could all share what we’re into and inspire each other to pursue new accessible passions?

Also, do y’all think watching movies or listening to music counts as hobbies? I’ve heard they do for some people.

I think so! Plus, we’re Swifties… If that isn’t a hobby, then I don’t know what is. 😂

Those are good questions. I think anything you do for the pleasure of it, even if it has now become a source of income and less enjoyable, can be listed as a hobby. If I was asked that question, I would say I love to sit outside and listen to audiobooks, and I like listen to music, and watch the Green Bay Packers win football games.

I agree with both of you. I definitely enjoy listening to music, especially Heavy metal music, so I definitely say that is A hobby of mine. Some other hobbies of mine are watching ice hockey, Listening to audiobooks, and Researching recipes and The science of food. However, 5 years ago I considered writing A hobby of mine. Now it is a job. I still enjoy it, but The importance of the writing makes so much more serious and sometimes Frustrating.

My favorite hobby is drawing. I started out drawing by hand, but when I lost the ability to do so, I taught myself how to do everything digitally. It took me years to fully understand how to make that switch, but I love what I do now.

So…hobbies is the one thing never had a problem with as i seem to have way too many. Here is my current run down.
Art * painting oils, watercolors , acrylics, drawing , sculpture , computer graphics
Crafts- Everything from stuffed bunnies and papercrafts to baby grandmother(?) clocks
Robotics and electronics -Designing robotic exoskeleton
3D printing
Inventions
Music-composing on computer , use to play electric guitar. When no longer physically able to play guitar , built cigar box guitar
Writing -Poetry, children’s books. Be sure to check out ‘Swoggle from Hoggendoggle’ and ‘Creaturs A to Z’
Landscape design
Computer programming

Now if only any of these hobbies actually paid me anything so could survive…that would be nice.

So true, and I love your artwork in the background! What medium did you use there? Do you have a website for your art?

Some of my interests have been relegated to my own research (I guess you might say it that way) like anthropology and archaeology. I’m fascinated by cultures throughout history and how they interact (define) the sacred.
I did come across this website that might be interesting for some of you. Researchers asking for help from the wider community.
