  • Has SMA ever helped you gain “freedom in failure”?

Like a huge swath of the internet’s population, I have been grooving to Taylor Swift’s new album, “The Life of A Showgirl.” It’s such an exuberant vibe overall, but one lyric from the song “Opalite” keeps calling out to me: Failure brings you freedom.

I like it because sometimes it’s true. Sometimes, we must fall to get back up and climb to new heights (pun intended). It’s a familiar path for anyone with SMA. But we don’t usually consider that, do we? So, in these rather stressful times, perhaps we should reflect on all the good that the bad has managed to bring us.

Do you feel that failure sometimes brought you a sense of freedom? How does SMA play into this concept?

I’ll share some of my own experiences below.

Admittedly, I would not have decided to try acting out if I wasn’t forced by my chronic pain to take a year-long break from the video games industry. When I was first hospitalised for pain, I had a lot of momentum behind my video games career. I was taking writing classes from a BAFTA-winning game writer, I was up for a fellowship, I was being mentored by one of my heroes to boot… And then, suddenly, everything had to come screeching to a halt.

I was in depressive moods about losing all that momentum for a long time. But taking a break made me think of trying other things out as I put my life back together again. I don’t know if I would change anything, given the choice.
