  • Staying on parents insurance at 26 years old and after

Hello! Has anyone here applied to stay on their parent’s insurance plan, got denied, than successfully appealed? I will turn 26 in January. We applied a few weeks ago and got a denial letter from our insurance a few days ago stating that I do not meet the qualifications of being severely physically disabled and being financially dependent on my parents.

For those that have successfully appealed a denial like this, is there any specific documentation that helped get approved?

Hi Lindsay, I wish I had more answers for you, but I didn’t have to appeal when I applied for this. Could it be because you’re not 26 yet? Also, just confirming that your parents still work? I was on my dad’s insurance up until he retired at the end of last year. The transition to my own plan was quite the nightmare. If your parents are no longer working, you will have to get your own insurance. That’s why I asked.

Hi! Our insurance requires us to submit the forms before I turn 26. My dad still works and is years away from retirement. The insurance is through the company he works at.

Check with your state’s local Disability services. It is possible that you might qualify for Medicare or the equivalent of REM (Rare Expensive Medical conditions …am not sure still exist under that name ). Any disability program , Insurance , etc., will try to deny you the first time apply. They do this knowing full well many people will give up. Anytime apply for any such programs , prepare to overload them with paperwork . Approvals live and die based upon how many sheets of paper they have to go through. Have a note from doctor about a hang-nail when were two…stick it in there. Proof of disability , genetic test, copies of doctor’s authorizing wheelchair …stick it in there . If can afford a lawyer, hire one to help build a chest of paperwork. What happens is they have to go through every piece of paper to explain why not qualify. Make it easier for them to simply say approved .
