NBCUniversal & AAPD are Offering a Scholarship

NBCUniversal is partnering with the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) to offer the NBCUniversal Tony Coelho Media Scholarship. Named after former congressman Tony Coelho, the scholarship will grant eight individuals 5,625 USD towards their undergraduate or graduate schooling. Applicants must be (a) disabled, and (b) pursuing a degree in the communications, media, or entertainment industry.

NBCUniversal is an American multinational media company; its subsidiaries include Universal Pictures, NBC News, E!, Hulu, and more. The AAPD is an organization dedicated to increasing the political and economic power of people with disabilities.
Applicants are not required to disclose the details of their disability, including their diagnosis; however, self-identification as disabled is part of the requirements. Applicants must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program, with plans to attend classes during the fall semester. U.S. citizenship is not required, but applicants must be attending an institution in the United States.
The 2018 NBCUniversal Tony Coelho Media Scholarship will open in April. The online application includes three essay questions. The applicant is also required to submit a résumé, an unofficial transcript, and a letter of recommendation.

The NBCUniversal Tony Coelho Media Scholarship scholarship is named after Tony Coelho, who served as chairman of the AAPD from June 2009 to June 2011. Coelho also represented the state of California in the U.S. Congress, serving six terms from 1978 to 1989, and was the primary author and sponsor of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). In 1994, during the presidency of Bill Clinton, Coelho was appointed chairman of the President’s Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities; he also worked as vice chairman of the National Task Force on Employment of Adults with Disabilities.
