“If at Birth You Don’t Succeed”
So I’m currently reading Zach Anner’s memoir “If at Birth You Don’t Succeed,” and there are so many things I love about this book. Anner is a comedian who has cerebral palsy, and while the book is full of laugh-out loud and irreverent humor, it also tackles love, independence and faith in the face of insurmountable challenges.
I really like Anner’s honesty here as he talks about his anxieties toward romance growing up, the struggles of being sexually inexperienced through most of his twenties and the highs and lows of working through his first real romantic relationship at the age of 29. He holds nothing back here, and I find myself both wildly entertained and emotionally moved reading his story.
I’m leaving a link to the book on Amazon here, and I’d really encourage you all to check it out. You can get it in print or digital format, or listen to an audiobook version. Fair warning, it is pretty irreverent if you’re sensitive to that kind of humor, but I really think that the R-rated jokes are executed with a purpose. Let me know if any of you are interested in checking this book out. I’d love to have a discussion about it here.
