Honesty in Conversations About SMA
Read Alyssa Silva’s latest column: https://smanewstoday.com/2018/12/14/sma-honest-conversation-essential/
I think she makes a great point here. The fact that her friend was honest about his original assumptions about her disability goes a long way. As much as I try to break down disability stereotypes through my writing and podcasts, I appreciate when people are totally honest. This guy originally thought that Alyssa couldn’t do much because of her having SMA, but over time he came to see her as just another human being who he could relate to. Even when people have these initial assumptions about us, talking with them and letting them be honest and ask questions is how they learn.
