  • Do you do “caregiving” for your familial caregivers?

    Did you know it’s National Family Caregivers Month? I didn’t until Halsey Blocher, our Columns Manager and another columnist at SMA News Today, pointed it out.

    Relationships with our caregivers are always tricky, especially if they’re family or become family. It’s good to take a moment to ponder that. But I find that we don’t really talk about ways we can make things easier by highlighting the ways patients do caregiving for our family, too, which can make things easier. If this is something you know you do, perhaps you could share how? It might help other patients navigate their own relationship dynamics at home.

    I’ll share some of my own practices below.

    My mum may not be entirely comfortable with me spoiling her, but damn it if I don’t leave her a choice. 😂

    I find the best way to take care of her, though, is to take errands off her shoulders or go to my medical appointments by myself. Helps her, like not everything is on her.
