• Giving Caregivers Time Off

With the holidays officially upon us, how do you handle caregiving scheduling? Do you give them the day off or still have them work? Do family and/or friends step in to help out?

Of course, it’s challenging given the fact that just because it’s a holiday doesn’t mean we don’t need help. (If only!) At the same time, it’s justified that a caregiver would want to be with their family on the holiday.

I still live at home with my parents who play a big role in my caregiving needs. My brother is a backup as well, so they’ll take over on holidays. What do you typically do?

I live my parents as well, so they take of me anytime there is not a nurse. We pretty much always give our nurses holidays off. Occasionally we will ask someone to work a few hours in the morning to help get me up and showered while my mom cooks, cleans, etc. but only if we know that they don’t have plans, and they know that they can always say no.
