• Happy 8th birthday, Ella!

    As his daughter Ella reaches another milestone, her 8th birthday, columnist Michael Casten recalls her birth the day she was diagnosed with SMA. He writes: “Ella is now 8 years old and thriving. Yes, she’s confined to a wheelchair. Yes, she needs help with many activities of daily living. Yes, the disease has compromised her health significantly. But no, SMA does not define her. Ella is defined by who she is as a person. Sensitive, caring, good-humored, bright, loving, and a fighter.”

    Thanks for sharing Michael. I’m always encouraged by stories of SMA parents like this. I just got back from the annual Cure SMA conference, and during the “It’s a Wonderful Life” panel there were several parents who came up to me and said that our (the SMA adults who spoke at the panel) gave them hope for the future.
