Hello! I am looking into moving to Minnesota from Louisiana. I have only researched the state minimally, but it looks like I would be able to buy into their medicaid program.

For anyone who lives in Minnesota, what is it like for the disability community? What is the healthcare system like? Pros and cons?

I am coming to the realization that I will more than likely need to move to a safe state pretty soon, so I’m trying to look into many states.

    Thanks!

Minnesota native here. As such I don’t know how difficult it is to move to the state and do the buy-in process. Overall my healthcare experience has been positive, however a lot depends on if you live in a bigger city versus a rural area. Rural living is tough. Lack of transportation, caregivers and limited knowledge in specialized care means you have to be a super self-advocate. Not to mention the winters are brutal. Plan on hibernating October through April.

If you don’t mind my asking what’s your biggest draw to Minnesota? What other states have you considered? I’ve often considered moving to a warmer climate but I don’t want to loose what I have and it seems so daunting to tackle.

What drew me into looking into Minnesota is how blue of a state it is. I also have some family members who live in or around St. Paul. I am looking into any blue state that I could move to. Currently, I live in Louisiana, which is a very red state. In a year from now, it will potentially be very unsafe for me to live in Louisiana. My biggest concern is healthcare and medications that are being potentially banned here. I know about the winters and I hate the cold, but unfortunately most blue states are cold. I will also be researching New Mexico soon. I currently live in a somewhat rural community, so I will be looking into bigger cities.

Have you looked into Maryland at all? Higher cost of living, but one of the few warm blue states. My Medicaid hardly ever denies anything, and I have great doctors at Hopkins. On the flip side, they don’t cover round the clock caregivers, and it takes months (even years) to get hours approved.
