Person-First Or Disability-First Language?
I loved Halsey’s recent column about the “correct” way to refer to someone who has a disability. Textbooks, the media, society, and many other outlets push the idea that person-first language is the proper way to refer to someone. Halsey challenges this idea by questioning why we’re limiting ourselves to a one-size-fits-all kind of solution when we could simply ask how the person chooses to identify themself.
As for me, I usually say I’m a disabled woman but don’t get offended or upset if someone calls me a woman with a disability. While I’m more lenient about how I’m being identified, I still believe it’s so important to honor what the other person prefers. Do you have a preference?
