I have SMA 4 that hit me when I was around 45.

My buttocks have atrophied to the point where It feels like when I sit down I’m setting on shards of glass. Does anyone have this problem? If so what do you do to help with the pain?

    Hey Barry –

Sorry to hear your experience with rear end pain. That doesn’t sound very pleasant at all. Does this happen with all chairs regardless of softness? In other words, does a hard wood chair and a padded office style chair result in the same discomfort? If consistent regardless of level of padding, perhaps talking with either your neurologist, an OT, or maybe even a PT might help. Does it happen immediately upon sitting or after a certain period of time? If after a period of time, a short term solution could be intervals of pressure relief.

I’m a type 3 and have been using a power wheelchair for about 10 years now. I use an air filled cushion, which helps with pressure. I don’t think that’s a very practical solution for you to carry around with you, but perhaps one of those for the chair you use primarily or most often may provide some relief?

I hope you’re able to find a solution. Please let us know how this works out for you.

    Barry,

I have SMA3 and and 100% mobile. I have the same thing where I call it my tiny tail my bony butt I don’t traditionally carry anything with me as far as cushion, but I may start looking into for lack of better term a hemorrhoid doughnut where you can blow something up to sit on when you’re out at restaurants or at any commercial places that have hard seats. Even in the car, I haven’t really found anything that alleviates the discomfort.

Hey, Barry. “Shards of glass” sounds like nerve pain to me, but don’t quote me on that. I don’t know if this is similar to what you are experiencing, but like Jeff, I’ve started experiencing tailbone/coccyx pain for the last six months. A hemorrhoid doughnut might be a good place to start. This may sound a little silly, but I started using a melted gel ice pack under my bottom. Basically, I wanted a gel-like cushion and somehow thought of an ice pack. It has helped tremendously. That and getting off my bottom throughout the day.

I would definitely speak to your physical therapist about this. I would also look into different seat cushion options for your wheelchair. What do you currently have?

I’ve tried all kinds of padding and I have tried a donut but the one I got is 2 small 2 help. I’ve tried setting on a frozen towel and I know what you mean it did help me more than anything. But it didn’t last long.

Thank you for your advice I’m going to look for a bigger donut.
