To say adulthood with SMA is complicated would be an understatement. But something we ought to consider is that we all have different definitions of what adulthood is, how it manifests, and when we feel like we’re in it.

Hence the question: what is “true adulthood” like for you? How does it differ from the conventional understandings of adulthood?

I’ll share my epiphany about my own experience that sparked my questions below.

Adulthood, for me, is recognising that what I want doesn’t always align with what I feel expected to want, and that’s okay. It’s knowing myself and listening to my body. I was sitting in a restaurant for a networking event, drinking Japanese white wine when I had the epiphany. I felt like I should have wanted to be there, as it could have provided contacts that would help advance my video game career, but what I really wanted was a glass of apple juice and to lie in bed.

    So I went home.
