In this video from the DNA Learning Center shared in July 2012, attorney Steve Mikita recalls attending Duke University and then taking the bar exam as an adult with type 3 spinal muscular atrophy (SMA).

Mikita was so determined to attend a “normal” college, and not one specifically geared for people with disabilities, that in 1974 he became the first freshman in a wheelchair to be accepted at Duke. Mikita never let SMA get in the way of his life so he devised ways to get around any problems — he is now an Assistant Attorney General for the state of Utah.
