How Having SMA Influences This Writer’s Life

SMA News Today columnist Brianna Albers describes herself more as a storyteller than a writer. In fact, she wants the outside world to see a storyteller, rather than a person who happens to have spinal muscular atrophy (SMA).

But are Albers’ stories influenced by SMA? She talks about a book she’s been writing for the past 10 years, where the character changes regularly to keep up with what she feels she needs in her life at the time. A superhero of sorts, who is stronger than her, who can do more than she can.

Albers speaks about the frustration of not “being seen,” and that through her stories she can be a character who is recognized for her strengths rather than her perceived weaknesses. She gets to live the life she wants through her stories. Read Brianna Albers “A Storyteller’s Tale: On Being Seen” here.
