2018 Disability Rights Storytellers Fellowship
The American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) and Rooted in Rights just announced the 2018 Disability Rights Storytellers Fellowship. This fellowship provides skills training in digital media storytelling for individuals with disabilities. It also prepares participants for careers in media production, journalism, online advocacy, or digital design, and assists them with networking in the larger professional community.
Throughout the 6-month program, fellows are expected to write and film 2 short videos using the provided production kit. The Rooted in Rights production team works with the fellows to cultivate their own personal voice. Participants are challenged to make their videos engaging and creative, while simultaneously adhering to quality, accessibility, and advocacy standards. Fellows also receive one-on-one mentorship with Rooted in Rights professionals that emphasizes feedback and guidance.
At the beginning of the program, fellows attend orientation sessions that cover disability rights and the media; they also attend technical workshops that allow for video production later on in the fellowship. Fellows also participate in online chats with media professionals that focus on breaking into the industry, particularly as an individual with a disability. Mentors aid their fellows in uncovering internship and employment opportunities, which may run concurrently with the Disability Rights Storytellers Fellowship.
Applications for the 2018 Disability Rights Storytellers Fellowship, which will run from January 2019 to June 2019, are due September 4, 2018. Applicants must be disabled, but do not need any previous experience with digital storytelling. The application includes personal information; a resume; 3 essays, in response to the 3 essay questions; a letter of recommendation; and, finally, demographic information, which is optional but encouraged. Finalists will be contacted for formal interviews, and fellows will be selected in October 2018.
