What advice do you have as I transition to a new medical team?
In a few months, I will be transitioning to a whole new team of doctors. I’m a little nervous because I have been with the same team for over two decades. These are the people who have solved my complex medical problems, saved my life on quite a few occasions, and have always been so willing to listen to my concerns and help me.
Unfortunately, they are all at the children’s hospital. I always thought they were just going to keep me there because the SMA clinic is there. I think they were under that impression, too, but the hospital is cracking down on patients 35 and older, and I turn 35 in October.
I’m sure some good will come out of this, too. It will be nice to be seen by doctors who treat adults and gain a fresh perspective on my health. But at the same time, I have felt such a good rapport with my current team and trust them with my life, literally, that I know the transition will be tough.
What are some things to know as I begin to build my new team? How should I explain my lengthy medical history, my needs, etc.? Any advice you have on meeting new doctors and making the transition seamless, I’m all ears.
PS- the main SMA News Today website has some excellent resources on this, too. I was just hoping to get your advice as well!
