Lately, my mum’s gotten on my case about how short my dresses are. She’s insisting I wear stockings (even though I have shorts underneath) and is anxious about people looking up my skirts. It was annoying at the moment — I mean, my skirts aren’t that short — but when I thought about it today, I oddly enjoyed the memory.

Due to the severe curvature of my spine and difficulty finding work, I didn’t get into exploring my personal style until a few years ago. I didn’t think it was worth the effort if all people saw was my SMA. Things obviously changed, and I’m now in a place where I’m comfortable dressing up for myself and discovering what I like. But it has meant I’m going through the phase where my mum nags about my clothes and makeup, about 10 years after our peers went through it. It’s strangely nice? And helps my life feel more normalised.

Thought I’d share it with y’all in case you needed a laugh.

I’m also curious — are there any “milestones” you’ve gone through that you didn’t think you’d be as fond of as you are?

Now that I’m in my thirties, I have changed my perspective on a lot of things and have definitely grown and matured. One example: I used to be extremely self-conscious of my skinny, muscleless legs. I was embarrassed by them and my AFOs and kept them hidden from the world. Then, one day, something came over me, and I was like, “Who cares if people think my legs look weird!?” If someone has a negative opinion of me, then so be it. I had reached a point where I was comfortable in my own skin, and that’s all that mattered. Wearing shorts/skirts for the first time was so freeing and quite the milestone. I’m sure there are many more, but I can only think of this one right now!
