Did you know May is Mental Health Awareness Month? My latest column explores mental health and how I’ve noticed— at least in my own experiences— that there has always been more of a heavier focus on my physical health than my mental health. Yes, being physically healthy is really fantastic when you have SMA. But if you’re struggling mentally, do you still consider yourself healthy? I explored this disconnect further in my column but would love to hear your thoughts as well.

I remember when I was 11 or 12 I sorta reasoned with myself that OK I’ll be physically weak but I’ll always be mentally strong.

I fell way short of that and fell into deep depression for years after some big things didn’t go well. I just didn’t care. Now I’m not as depressed and do care a bit so anxiety & regret has taken over.

Personally I think depression is easier, but not for your loved ones.
