Columnist Writes About SMA Awareness Month
Happy Tuesday! With SMA Awareness Month drawing to a close, I wanted to write a column about it. A conversation I had with a friend from Singapore inspired it.
As much as I love the initiative, I sometimes wonder if SMA Awareness Month offers much value to the community. I lay out my argument in the column, with the caveat that many people appreciate SMA Awareness Month, which is great! I just wanted to hold some space for those who of us who maybe aren’t as comfortable with it.
What are your thoughts on awareness month?

I can see where you’re coming from. Like, if people truly wanted to know about my disease they could google it. It’s not my obligation to tell them. At the same time, I don’t mind when people ask. I also don’t feel pressured to post during SMA Awareness Month. I think my online platform, in general, indirectly raises awareness for SMA every day of the year. While I’m not necessarily educating people, I’m giving them a glimpse at my day-to-day and sharing stories which, ultimately, have SMA has its common theme. I’m just not directly sharing factual information.
