Columnist Writes About the Value of Pets
Hey everyone, here’s Kala’s newest column. She talks about the importance of pets in her life. My family has had a mini golden doodle, Zoe, for about five years, but that’s basically the extent of my experience with pets. Zoe’s definitely a beloved member of the family, even though she’s stolen my food a few times. Are pets a big part of your guys’ lives?

I have a cat and a dog. They are definitely big parts our family. They’re both extremely cuddly and sensitive to my needs/limitations.

Growing up on a hobby farm I’ve been surrounded by animals my whole life. I love that they don’t judge on your disability. Sure they might be hesitant of the wheelchair at first, but soon enough they think nothing of it. I had a cat that would specifically hitch a ride to the barn on my feet. He’d hop on at the house and when I got to his destination he’d jump off.
Pets are a great way to gain responsibility as well. Along with the farm animals, cats and dogs I’ve also had fish, hermit crabs and even a guinea pig. Now that I’m on my own I have a cat & dog and that’s sufficient.
