Defying the “Caregiver Cliché”
I just came across this article after a writer with SMA who I follow shared it on Facebook: https://progressive.org/dispatches/smart-ass-cripple-the-caregiver-cliche-181123/.
This writer is blunt and sarcastic, which I love. He makes some good points about stereotypes regarding caregivers and the people who they take care of. I laughed at the part in which the writer googled the word “caregiver,” and found images of medical professionals tending to helpless old folks who greeted them with a smile. It’s a far cry from what my caregiver and I look like.
Do you all have any thoughts on this piece? Again, this writer loves to use sarcasm, and he uses an unabashedly crass pseudonym. We’re adults here though, so I’m ok posting it here. Let me know your thoughts.
