Would you give a caregiver prospect a second chance by rescheduling their interview if something came up?

How about a third chance by rescheduling again when they didn’t make it to the rescheduled interview and didn’t message you until after the time they were supposed to be here?

When I opted not to reschedule a second time for the following day, expressing I needed dependability, they seemed shocked and said they could be here in ten. If they could be here in ten, why couldn’t they have been here ten minutes ago? I explained that I was busy and wouldn’t be rescheduling and left it at that.

How do you handle these situations?

I do try to give people a second chance because things happen, emergencies come up, kids get sick, whatever. That’s life.

But missing another interview? And no call to let you know until after the fact? No. If the interview is not a priority, how can they promise the job will be a priority? No harm, no foul. It’s better to know this isn’t the right fit before you’re counting on them to get you out of bed.

I’ve no idea why they were shocked, they didn’t make it to two interviews. Those meetings are designed to tell you who this person is, and their actions have been very clear about their priorities.

While you don’t owe them an explanation, you can simply say you have other interviews scheduled.

That sounds like a big red flag to me. I think you definitely made the right call.

I’m all for second chances, but flakiness is not okay when relying on someone to care for my physical needs. That said, sometimes I don’t always have the luxury of turning someone away when I’m desperate for help. Sometimes, it’s a take-what-I-can-get kind of thing.
