Hashtag Promotes Body Positivity for People with Disabilities
In response to an offensive Tweet from former Jeopardy champion Ken Jennings, the hashtag #HotPersonInAWheelchair became a trending topic on Twitter this weekend.
Since this controversy resurfaced after Jennings refused to apologize for this Tweet in 2014, this new hashtag is meant to encourage people with disabilities to embrace their appearances. This conversation is also meant to help break down stereotypes about people with disabilities being seen as unattractive and incapable of romantic relationships.
The #HotPersonInAWheelchair hashtag has acquired international attention among various disability communities, with hundreds of wheelchair-users posting selfies and sharing their stories. The message is that people with disabilities and in wheelchairs are attractive and just as capable of romantic relationships as anyone else.
