Meet Regina and Al. Their friendship and respect for one another all started at a fundraiser before a Phillies baseball game in 2019. “I watched Regina give a beautiful speech at the event about her recently diagnosed son, Shane,” recalled Al. “I thought to myself, ‘My friends at Cure SMA need to meet this amazing mom and get her involved.’”
Today is International Day of Acceptance, a day in which we celebrate and honor the acceptance of all disabilities. It was started by an organization called 3e love which was founded by the late Annie Hopkins who also had SMA.
I love how this day brings the disability community together to shed light on the many challenges and injustices we face on a daily basis. So often I’ve been misjudged or inaccurately portrayed by those who aren’t well educated or quick to judge my disease. Days like today remind me to exercise my voice and continue to break down disability stigmas with my platform.
This got me thinking… what are some ways you bring awareness to life with SMA if at all? How can we band together to make International Day of Acceptance an everyday occurrence?
