    Ever heard of Cybernics Treatment?

It’s essentially a therapy regimen that involves exercising with help from a device developed in Japan, called HAL (short for Hybrid Assistive Limb). I got a peek of it at the 25th anniversary celebration of Muscular Dystrophy Association (Singapore) — as I’ve mentioned in my latest column. Attach the sensors in the right places, and there you go! HAL temporarily boosts your range and strength, allowing you to train your muscles further than without it. <div>I’m curious about what y’all think of a device like HAL. Do you think it’d be helpful to you? Are there alternative therapies you think would be better? Do you have any suggestions for its developers?

This sounds awesome. I need to look into this more to see what the availability of it might be, and how well it would work for me. But anything that can help augment my physical abilities I’m all for.

I was intrigued by these types of devices that are worn over the body. I thought of them as the outer version of bionics. If you are old enough to remember the TV show the Bionic Man, I often fantasized about becoming bionic. If not, it was kind of like the Terminator except the machinery was only placed in certain “damaged” body parts.

Fantasizes aside, I recently spoke to a physical therapist who happens to specialize in SMA about these exoskeleton devices and she said that they are difficult to get into and aren’t as practical as you would think. I’m not giving up on the idea of using one yet, but maybe I’ll wait until it’s more user friendly. The fact that they are in existence alone is exciting, especially since we are living in a world of fast paced technology.
