I am having surgery tomorrow to remove all 4 wisdom teeth plus 3 other teeth. Has anyone used cough assist after having this surgery? I do not want to get a dry socket and experience that kind of pain lol. My doctor called out a few different medications for me to stop/quit coughing and so far it seems to have worked. Just worried that if I needed cough assist, it would create a dry socket due to the force of the sucking in part. Plus I can’t use a straw for 2 weeks, so any tips on staying hydrated? Plan to eat a lot of ice cream and just have my parents hold a cup up to my mouth for me.

Hi Lindsay. Unfortunately I don’t have any firsthand experience for you. Have you spoken with your pulmonologist? I’m not sure if that’s who you meant when you said doctor.

As far as hydration goes, I recommend adding popsicles to the list! Someone could cut it up for you to eat with a spoon. That’s how I eat mine haha. Also, could you add liquid IV or some type of electrolytes to your drinks? That way, you don’t have to worry about drinking as much.

Good luck tomorrow! Please let us know how it goes!

I actually don’t have a pulmonologist right now. The area where I live, it’s a waste of time, because they don’t know anything about SMA. I was referring to the oral surgeon in my post.

Thanks for reminding me about popsicles! I’ll be drinking mainly powerade and water after surgery. Along with ice cream for a few days.

My primary doctor put me on some steroids for a few days before my surgery and gave me some liquid medication for after, to stop me from coughing. He also gave me some new nebulizer medication to help. Hopefully all these medications work and I won’t even need cough assist!

What do you mean by cough assist? Been living with SMA for 50 years, barely able to move, and never heard the phrase. Guessing that is a lucky thing. I love learning stuff here.

Cough assist is a machine that aides in coughing. It will push air in and pull air out at a pressure programmed into the device. It can be extremely helpful for those of us with weakened respiratory function.

How are you feeling after they took your wisdom teeth out?

Aside from Pedialyte I only have one suggestion: oil pulling. First thing in the morning you take a spoon of coconut oil and swish around your mouth from 5 to 20 minutes. The texture can be off-putting but tolerable. Swish and spit out.

Dentists generally don’t recommend it because there’s very little modern double blind data on the subject, but it’s been part of Ayurvedic medicine for centuries. Studies have found it can lower bacteria in the mouth and slow cavities from developing.
