  • How do I navigate losing health insurance?

Posted by alyssa-silva on August 26, 2024 at 9:53 am

In a few months, my dad will be retiring, which means I will lose my main health insurance. My dad currently buys into a program where we get Blue Cross, and then I have Medicaid as a backup.

Right now, I’m trying to figure out what happens when I lose Blue Cross. Will Spinraza still be covered? Can I still cross the border into Massachusetts, where all my specialists are?

I know things vary by state, but have you traveled down this road before? Do you have any tips or resources that you found helpful?

Is your dad aging into Medicare? If not. I would highly suggest that you go on healthcare.gov and look at the Blue Cross Blue Shield options for your family. Because he has a life change, such as retirement or a change in jobs, you don’t have to wait for open enrollment for next year. I don’t know if that’s financially feasible, but it is something to look into.

I’m certainly not qualified to give advice but it worked out for me alright. I didn’t know as a disabled adult child I could’ve petitioned to stay on Dad’s insurance longer so when I turned a certain age I was automatically kicked off and relied on Medicare primary Medicaid secondary. I had worked enough to qualify for Medicare as a disabled adult. I wonder if you could get Medicare once you get dropped from Blue Cross. The combo has been helpful as one or the other covers what I need.

I have to admit the quality of care from my perspective declined once I was off Dad’s plan. Suddenly I didn’t need the dental work they pushed before. Fewer choices, especially when it came to ordering a new chair. I felt rushed through the system if I needed a hospital stay yet getting dme takes longer. Could just be my experience but wanted to be upfront. My advice is advocate, advocate advocate.

Are there advisors that could guide you in the right direction?

Ughhh, I wish I hadn’t read the dental part, but I appreciate the transparency. I literally just had the worst dentist appointment yesterday and found out I have a lot of dental work in my future. My dad has an amazing dental plan that I’m also on right now, but he loses that when he retires. It’s a big concern for us.

I think I automatically go on Medicare when my dad does. I’m pretty sure that’s what he told me. There’s been so much back and forth that I’m just a bit confused at this point. I believe someone is putting him in touch with the right person with the right answers. I just wanted to do my own research, too.
