In the latest episode of Dose of DeAnn: A Glimpse Into My Life with SMA, I talk about being asked about my disability, and how I answer these questions. People often come up to me and say things like “Why are you in a wheelchair?” or “What happened?” The latter question really irritates me, and plenty of other people in wheelchairs.
My responses tend to vary depending on the situation. I like to educate people about what it’s like to have a disability, but I don’t always go into detail about the scientific aspects of SMA. In this video, I provide several examples of encounters I’ve had with strangers. I also talk about why I prefer being asked questions than being ignored.

I love someone when someone asks me about my illness, here’s an example. Some years ago, my neighbor, who was about ten years old, asked me what I was sick, and I told him, and he told me that I was lying, because he his mother said I was suffering from a childhood paralysis.

Yes, I agree Adnan. It’s nice to have someone ask rather than speculate and have wrong information. Teachable moments are a great opportunity to bring awareness to SMA.
